The Strike Dates Taxi and PHV Drivers Need To Be Aware Of

2023 continues the trend of strike action that dominated 2022. Unions across all sectors have been staging walkouts over pay in the face of the cost-of-living crisis.

While the strikes are being called to improve pay for workers, they have the power to significantly benefit taxi and PHV drivers as well.

Rail strikes often lead to more work for cabbies, as people look for alternative transport arrangements. The recent strikes from ambulance workers have also caused a spike in the taxi and PH services being used.

Below, we look at the key strike dates you need to be aware of to make the most of increased demand.

National Rail Strikes

Both the ASLEF and RMT Unions have confirmed they will be taking part in industrial action on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 1st February 2023

  • Friday 3rd February 2023

This is likely to affect 19 train companies across Britain.

The following 13 companies have already confirmed that they will be running no services on Wednesday 1st and Friday 3rd February:

  • Avanti West Coast

  • Chiltern Railways

  • CrossCountry

  • East Midlands Railway

  • Gatwick Express

  • Great Northern

  • Heathrow Express

  • London Northwestern Railway

  • Southeastern

  • Southern

  • Thameslink

  • TransPennine Express

  • West Midlands Railway.

The other 6 train companies have not yet finalised how the strike action will affect their services on these dates. These companies are:

  • c2c

  • Great Western Railway

  • Greater Anglia (including Stansted Express)

  • LNER

  • Northern

  • South Western Railway (including Island Line).

While they haven’t finalised how the industrial action will affect their service, it is expected to be severely disrupted.

Ambulance Strikes

Paramedics and ambulance workers will be joining their NHS colleagues on the 6th of February for what is expected to be the biggest strike in the health services history.

Taxis and PHV are often relied upon heavily for hospital visits during these strikes.

Despite the Department for Health and Social Care’s reassurance that they are “continuing to have constructive discussions" with unions, there appears to be no end in sight.

The full strike dates for ambulance workers in February are:

  • 6th

  • 17th

  • 20th

  • 22nd

The areas affected by these strikes varies, as not all ambulance trusts have voted to take part in the strikes. It’s best to check in your local area to find out what’s happening near you.
